NYC Ferry presents 'Welcome to My Neighborhood', a photo gallery highlighting our 2017 routes

PHOTOVILLE is New York City’s free premier photo destination. Produced by United Photo Industries, the annual festival is a modular venue built from re-purposed shipping containers. By creating a physical platform for photographers of all stripes to come together and interact, Photoville provides a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse audience — a veritable cross-section of the world’s photographic community.

Photoville returns for a sixth year, in picturesque Brooklyn Bridge Plaza, from September 13-24, 2017. Once again, Brooklyn Bridge Plaza—located in Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO beneath the majestic span of the Brooklyn Bridge— will be transformed into an immersive photography village populated by 55+ shipping containers repurposed into galleries.

NYC Ferry launched on May 1st, 2017, with the goal of bringing much-needed transportation options to neighborhoods traditionally underserved by public transit. We want to showcase these neighborhoods from the unique perspectives of the youth who live and spend time there. Each of our 2017 routes—Rockaway, East River, South Brooklyn and Astoria—are represented in our Photoville gallery ‘WELCOME TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD’ by youth photographers who want to welcome you to their neighborhood.

RED HOOK (South Brooklyn Route) – Photographers Trevor Torres (16) and Jonathan Ocana (20)

Trevor Torres used this photo gallery to highlight the people in his life who make his neighborhood a home. He shows us the good and the bad parts of his home, and reminds us that “when you live in Red Hook and you need help, you know the people over here will help you out.”

Jonathan Ocana‘s perspective is large. He uses photography to highlight the beauty and the complicated nature of Red Hook. He likes to shoot from “big distances so you can see the world around you.”

ROCKAWAY (Rockaway Route) – Photographer Michael Kelly (15)

Michael Kelly loves Rockaway and wants people to know that it is a “large and unique place.” Rockaway couldn’t be more connected to the water, and encourages people to “discover all that its neighborhoods have to offer.”

NORTH WILLIAMSBURG (East River Route) – Photographer Uriah Roman (17)

Uriah Roman believes that Williamsburg is art. He sees it in the clothing that people choose to wear and the graffiti and architecture surrounding him. “Williamsburg helps you find yourself.”

LONG ISLAND CITY (Astoria Route) – Photographer Naloni Ferguson (15)

Naloni Ferguson considers Western Queens a second home. She loves the community and sense of compassion she feels here. She believes that “photos have the ability to hold time at a standstill in a way other mediums cannot” and shows us snapshots of those moments she witnessed.
