October 21, 2016

It has been a busy week at NYC Ferry, and we are looking forward to a weekend filled with fun adventures! October in New York City is famous for its many fall-time activities ranging from festivals to apple picking, but this weekend, we want to focus on fun yet affordable things to do both inside and outside this potentially rainy fall weekend.

As this rainy day kicks off the weekend, you may squeeze in a trip to an iconic New York City museum before ending your week. New York City’s many museums offer free or donation-based days throughout the month, and this Friday you can make a free trip to the Modern Museum of Art (MoMA), the New York Aquarium or Museum of the Moving Image between 4pm and 8pm, or make a late evening trip to the Rubin Museum of Art, closing as late as 10pm tonight.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

If you are already in the spooky halloween mood, and interested in a rather gory way to celebrate the morbid holiday – try this live pop-up experience at the Samsung 837 experiential store in the Meatpacking District. The host tempts attendees with the seductive cult classic and promises complimentary halloween themed cocktails and bites for those attending! This Friday’s 7pm event is free, but requires you to RSVP.

Saturday: Enjoy the Fall Colors in a Garden

Start your Saturday the right way by embarking on a trip to one of the city’s many beautiful gardens to spot the leaves changing colors! This Saturday, admission is free to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden between 10am-11am, right off the 2,3, B, Q, S, 4 and 5 trains by Prospect Park, where you can continue your park adventures or check out a local coffee shop after your garden visit.

Another option is to visit the 125 year old New York Botanic Garden in the Bronx, where the Azalea Garden is currently one of the garden’s most colorful fall views. The garden offers free entry between 9am-10am, with a special event featuring some of the world’s largest pumpkins at the annual “Giant Pumpkins” exhibition both Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday Runday?

This Sunday, Delta joins active New Yorkers bright and early at 7am as they run up the Hudson River Parkway. The airline promises an encouragement-filled route of stations offering runners refreshments and cheers, ensuring runners to stay focused and motivated to the finish line. The race starts at 353 West Street and is free for all runners!

The Lower East Side Cider Fest

This Sunday, a sweet and bubbly festival featuring ciders from all around New York State will be taking place along the suitably named Orchard Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The festival will give you a chance to sample ciders from the Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley, Western New York and local NYC brewers, who will be pouring samples alongside cider-friendly food combinations. Visitors of all ages are welcome at the street’s festival, but if you wish to enjoy flights of delicious ciders, you are required to pick up a 21+ wristband in front of Wassail at 162 Orchard Street. The event itself is free to attend, but we recommend registering on this website in order to receive more information.

Is Your Sweet Tooth Aching?

Here’s your chance to make this weekend extra sweet while doing social good! The Grand Bazaar on the Upper West Side will be hosting a Halloween themed Artisanal Sweet Treats Bazaar this Sunday between 10am-5:30pm, featuring the city’s 25 best artisanal “sweet makers.” Entry to the event is free of charge, but the cost of the “best artisanal macaroons, spiced pumpkin pies, freshly baked cupcakes, experimental ice cream sandwiches, and the most mouthwatering truffles and chocolates” will be donated to local schools, benefitting over 4,000 students.
