Did you know women make up just 27% of the STEM workforce? This summer, NYC Ferry is partnering with STEM From Dance, an organization working towards raising this percentage, and making the future of STEM more equitable for girls and young women so that all New Yorkers have access to innovative careers of the future.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, but it means so much more than that. STEM is the science of using data and information to solve some of the world’s greatest problems. It features some of our country’s most high-impact and innovative jobs across a variety of industries, yet it is greatly lacking in diversity.
STEM From Dance exists to tackle diversity in the STEM workforce. STEM From Dance is working to build a world in which the growing STEM workforce is just as diverse as our population.
It is not a lack of talent or intelligence that prevents young women from pursuing STEM fields, but undeveloped confidence and STEM environments that are often unapproachable. STEM From Dance breaks down the intimidation barrier and empowers young women to develop the confidence, skills, and awareness necessary to engage in and pursue a future in STEM.
In partnership with NYC Ferry, STEM From Dance is ensuring that young women from across the five boroughs have access to vibrant and unique education and experiences both during the ongoing pandemic via virtual events and experiences and as the city reopens and returns to traditional in-person activities. As the official transportation sponsor of STEM From Dance, NYC Ferry provides reliable transportation to students from across the city as they explore the incredible opportunities of these exciting fields of study.
This July, STEM From Dance will host their signature summer program Girls Rise Up, where girls can spend an energizing and insightful two weeks moving to the rhythm of different dance styles, learning how to code, and exploring ways to combine creativity and technology into one innovative dance performance. New York City students will have the opportunity to participate in Girls Rise Up either virtually or with some in-person experiences.
As the official transportation sponsor for STEM From Dance, NYC Ferry is excited to support New York City youth in their commute to a brighter STEM future. For more information on all of STEM From Dance’s programs, visit their website. The application for Girls Rise Up will be available on March 1st on the Girls Rise Up website.
