Today, on January 25th, 2017, the first of a total of ten new NYC Ferry landings opening this year began construction. The new landing is being installed at Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive in the Rockaways, where it will further connect to a shuttle bus. The event was attended by incoming NYCEDC President James Patchett. Below is a photograph from DNAinfo.com President James Patchett signing a steel pile at the site of the landing during today’s ceremony.
What will the completed landings be like?
Installed with seating, and ticketing machines, the indoor waiting areas will assist in creating a pleasurable experience for our riders, no matter the season. Tickets will also be available on the service’s mobile application for single rides ($2.75/ride) as well as monthly passes. Furthermore, you will be able to bring your bike ($1) or surfboard with you onboard on this route, as the Rockaway bound vessels are equipped with surfboard and bike racks.
So what can you expect in the Rockaways?
The ferry landing is located on the north side of the peninsula, where the ferry ride to and from Pier 11/Wall Street will take approximately one hour. Upon disembarking the ferry, you will be able to hop on a shuttle bus, which will take you past the abundance of boutiques, restaurants, bars, and miles of beaches.
“With the extension of the shuttle bus at both ends of the Rockaway Peninsula, even more Rockaway residents and future visitors will be able to enjoy the newest way to Work, Live, Play once NYC Ferry becomes operational,” said Cameron Clark, Senior Vice President of Hornblower and Project Manager of NYC Ferry.
