2016 has been an incredible year for NYC Ferry by Hornblower. From winning the New York City BID in March to kickstarting vessel construction at our two U.S. shipyardsHorizon Shipbuilding (AL) and Metal Shark Boats(LA) in July, the vision of bringing New Yorkers a modern and reliable ferry system is quickly becoming reality.

Beginning in 2017, NYC Ferry by Hornblower will provide a new, affordable way to travel between waterfront communities throughout New York City. Subsidized by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (democrat), $2.75 per ride will allow New Yorkers work, live and play in the city that never sleeps, enjoying ferry service across a four ferry routes stretching a full 60 miles of waterways reaching from Astoria to Far Rockaway.

More than 100 employees are working tirelessly at both Horizon Shipbuilding (AL) and Metal Shark Boats(LA) to complete the total of 16 ferries that will be sailing up and down the New York City harbor come summer 2017. Each of the ferries that will be taking New Yorkers across routes between Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn for $2.75 per ride, take approximately 7.5 – 8.5 months to complete, and are projected to carry some 4.6million riders per year.

So how far have the vessels come in 2016?

Metal Shark Boats

This shipyard is currently constructing five of their six contracted Citywide Ferries, with material on-site for the sixth vessel. Metal Shark Boats begins the shipbuilding process by building the hulls upside down, and once this section has been completed, the hull is flipped and waits for the superstructure and pilothouse to be constructed separately and later placed atop the completed hull and main deck.

Vessel #1
This vessel (pictured above) was the first to begin construction in July, 2016. Thus far, the metal fabrication has been completed, the railing installation (inside) is 80% completed and the insulation installation is 85% completed. In addition to this, the engine pre alignment is 90% completed, the shaft/strud is 90% completed, piping system is 40% completed and the electric system has begun. The next step will be to add the joinery package, which will start in few weeks.

Vessel #2

The second vessel at Metal Shark Boats, is currently finished with 95% metal fabrication, 70% of its railing installation, 60% of its insulation installation, 70% of the engine pre alignment, and the shaft/strud has begun. This means that it has come quite far and thus “looking more like a ferry,” just like vessel number one. The next step of installing the joinery package will start at the same time as the vessel before it.

Vessel #3 and #4
These vessels had completed their hulls and been flipped over around Thanksgiving 2016, and last we checked on them, they were about to receive their superstructures. Today, vessel number three has completed 80% of its metal fabrication, 40% of its railing installation, begun their shaft/strud installation and completed half of the engine pre alignment. The fourth vessel has completed its hulls, begun engine installation and the superstructure construction will begin before the end of 2016.

 Vessel #5

This vessel is the newest addition to the construction, with its hull construction begun this week (week of December 19th), and will be flipped once the hulls are complete early 2017.

Horizon Shipbuilding

The Alabama shipyard is currently in process of building all ten contracted vessels, and begun construction of the first vessel in July 2016. This shipyard builds the vessels quite differently from Metal Shark Boats, where Horizon constructs the vessels from hull to superstructure completing one total piece at the time, equipping each layer of the vessel with its appropriate electronics, fabrication and piping before moving to the next level of the vessel.

Vessel #1
This is the first vessel that begun construction in July, and reached 100 days of construction mid-November. The metal fabrication of this vessel has been completed, and it has currently competed 85% of insulation installation, 95% pre alignment of the engine, 95% of shaft/strud installation, 80% of the piping system, and half way completed installing the electrical system. Next up will be the installment of the joinery package.

Vessel #2

This vessel begun construction around the same time as vessel number one, and has also completed its metal fabrication. Furthermore, 65% of the insulation installation is complete, 95% of engine pre alignment, 95% of shaft/strud installation, 70% of its piping system and 40% of its electrical system. The next step will be for the joinery package to be installed, which will begin early 2017.

Vessel #3
The third vessel under construction has made it quite far, completing 85% of its metal fabrication, 65% insulation installation, 85% pre alignment of the engine, 85% of the shaft/strud installation, 70% of the piping system, and 40% electrical system. The installation of the joinery package will begin in February 2017.

Vessel #4
The fourth vessel has recently completed 85% of its metal fabrication, 30% engine pre alignment, 35% of its shaft/strud installation, 30% of the piping system, and it has begun installing the electrical system. The joinery package installation will begin in February 2017.

Vessel #5
The fifth vessel has made it to 55% completion of its metal fabrication, and begun the engine pre alignment, shaft/strud installment, as well as the piping and electrical systems.

Vessels #6-10

These are the second half of vessels being constructed at this shipyard, all in the beginning phases of metal fabrication. The sixth vessel has completed 45%, the seventh and eight vessels are at 35%, while the the ninth and tenth vessels are at 25%.

When the NYC Ferry Service is fully operational in 2018, the total of six routes will carry an estimated 4.6 million trips per year. The expansion of the city’s transit system by water builds on several years of ferry planning and operations experience, with NYCEDC leading the project by building ten new ferry landings, renovating six others, and selecting operator(s) to run the service.
