Open Space Alliance (OSA) Town Hall

Tuesday, October 25th
McCarren Play Center

Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA) was formed in 2003 to raise private funds to expand and improve open space in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, and is today committed to improving all 40+ parks in Community District 1. The NYC Ferry team attended to learn more about the Open Space Alliance’s concerns and thoughts on the changes happening in their district.

“OSA is a non-profit organization that partners with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to maintain and enhance 45 parks and playgrounds in Williamsburg and Greenpoint and improve the lives of over 200,000 North Brooklynites” – OSA

The Town Hall hosted a great Q&A with Tupper Thomas, who has been working with parks in the United States most of her career. We heard about a great variety of programming that is happening in the neighborhoods, including volunteer days, education days and fun family-friendly events for the community to engage in.

It was a passionate group of community members who all care about their neighborhood and the public spaces and parks within it, who met for the Town Hall to raise their voices for their home district. El Puente, a community human rights institution, was also there to discuss important topics, such as the air quality study they’ve been doing in parks across Williamsburg.

For this month’s LOMA meeting, the topics varied from the association’s programming updates, with programs such as Get Low, Influencer Activations and their push for tourism from China.

“LOMA is a voluntary organization that brings the businesses of lower Manhattan together and creates invaluable opportunities for every member. Lower Manhattan stretches from river to river, South of Canal Street.” – LOMA

Furthermore, the focus for November’s meeting was the recent interesting research by the Alliance for Downtown New York, namely the Young Professionals Report and Q3 Real Estate Report. Other highlights included interesting updates and exciting announcements from the 9/11 Memorial Museum 5K Race, the new iPic Fulton Market, the Schimmel Center at Pace University, THE DOWNTOWN EXPERIENCE Powered by THE RIDE, the Old Seaport Alliance and Attract China.
