NYC Ferry will open up a second dock in Long Island City next summer. On Monday, local officials and community leaders gathered at Gantry Plaza State Park to unveil the plan. The ferry service will alleviate the lack of transportation options for Long Island City commuters.
“This is one of the fastest growing communities in all of New York City, and one of the most desirable communities to live in, and so therefore, there are certain pressures that get placed on the transportation infrastructure,” said Long Island City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer. “We, the people of Long Island City, desperately need more diverse and ample modes of transportation.”
Senator Michael Gianaris showed support for the new dock as well. “We look forward to continuing to find even more great ways for people to get around rather than waiting for the 7 train to show up, which is an adventure for anyone who is trying to do it,” he said.
Cameron Clark, Senior Vice President and Project Manager, NYC Ferry, shared that Hornblower is looking forward to bringing this project to Long Island City. “Hornblower is excited to bring NYC Ferry to Gantry Plaza State Park along Long Island City’s thriving waterfront,” he said. “It’s a location offering a great opportunity to establish critical connections to nearby bus and subway lines as we get ready to introduce a new way to Work Live Play throughout New York Harbor 365 days a year, seven days week when we launch next summer.”
The new Gantry Plaza State Park dock, which will be located on Center Boulevard, is expected to have the most riders outside of all of the non-Manhattan stops along the ferry routes.
