Ready to do Some Good? Paint a Boat!
Come Paint the Mary A. Whalen Red
Pier 11, Atlantic Basin
Saturday, November 19th
10:00am – 4:00pm
Price: Free!
Feel like doing something good while enjoying the sun and bringing a historical maritime hero back to life? Here’s your chance!
So why is she so special? Today the Mary A. Whalen lives on Pier 11 in the Atlantic Basin in Red Hook, but she is the last of her kind and was once a crucial part of the shipping industry. Launched in 1938, she moved gasoline until 1968 under the name S.T. KIDDOO, but she began moving heavier fuel products in 1958 with the new name – Mary A. Whalen. Finally in 1994, she finished her time in the shipping industry.
With a 4 hour commitment (compensated by a hot delicious cassoulet meal!) you will have the chance to enjoy the maritime smells and fresh sea breeze of Red Hook, only a few blocks from where NYC Ferry will launch in 2017! Afterwards, make sure to stop by our other neighborhood favorites and learn more at the Waterfront Museum, sample wines at Red Hook Winery or get a taste of the south at Hometown Bar-B-Que!
