Neighborhood Fun Facts

  • Brooklyn Heights was originally referred to as “Brooklyn Village” and has been a prominent part of Brooklyn since 1834, but was called “the high sandy bank” (Ihpetonga) by the native Lenape American Indians before the Dutch settled in the area
  • Ferries have been running on Brooklyn Heights’ waterfront along the East River as early as 1642, serving the farms in the area. The most famous ferry to serve the area was run by Cornelius Dirksen and connected Brooklyn and Manhattan!
  • Atlantic Avenue is an important street in Brooklyn as it stretched from the East River, all the way to Jamaica, Queens
